Gilmore Girls S05E06 'Norman Mailer, I'm Pregnant!'

šŸŒŸ Norman Mailer's Surprising Appearance & Sookie's Meltdown šŸŒŸ

  • šŸ¤ Reason for Mailerā€™s Cameo: Norman Mailer agreed to appear because his son Stephen was invited.
  • šŸŽ Sookieā€™s Outburst: Sookie's meltdown is kind of relatable ā€“ who hasn't had a day where everything goes wrong? But honestly, she could dial it back a notch.
  • šŸ‘¶ Big News: Sookie reveals she's pregnant! What is it with TV shows and surprise pregnancies, though?

šŸŽ¬ James Berg & Stan Zimmermanā€™s Midas Touch šŸŽ¬

  • TV Magic Makers: Berg and Zimmerman, the heroes we donā€™t deserve but definitely need. They turn everything into gold ā€“ literally, have you seen the ā€œGolden Girlsā€?

šŸ•µļøā€ā™€ļø Rory's Secret Society Adventure: Not Your Average College Life šŸ•µļøā€ā™€ļø

  • The Interview & The Mystery: Roryā€™s encounter with the masked lady is chefā€™s kiss. So surreal, it makes me question my own college days.
  • Latin Phrase & Secret Society: ā€œIn omnia paratusā€ sounds so Harry Potter-esque. Yale might as well be Hogwarts at this point.
  • Logan Connection: Logan and secret societies? Yes please, Iā€™m here for the drama. Really making toxic, lying Dean look like a grocery store bag boy here.

šŸ˜¤ Sookie Stereotype Issue: Can We Not? šŸ˜¤

  • Sookie's Portrayal: I'm so over this pregnant-woman-as-unhinged stereotype. Letā€™s get some fresh takes, people. Itā€™s the 21st century!

šŸŒ©ļø Christopher & Lorelai: Can We Crowdfund a Clue for Chris? šŸŒ©ļø

  • Supportive Lorelai: She's an angel but sometimes too patient. Christopher needs a wake-up call, stat!
  • Man Up, Christopher!: Clueless isn't cute anymore, Christopher. Google. Parenting books. Do something!

šŸ¤” Final Thoughts šŸ¤”

  • Roryā€™s Moment: Rory telling Christopher to keep his distance ā€“ mic drop! But also, where's that Rory energy in other situations? She spoke my truth! Could not root harder. Ā Protect Luke from the writers!
  • In Summary: This episode is like a rollercoaster after drinking three espressos. We've got family bonding, meltdowns, secret societies, and clueless dads. Buckle up, itā€™s a wild ride!

Next week, let's have Christopher attend a parenting class, and can someone get Norman Mailer his tea already? šŸæšŸŽ„

Standard Review: Norman Mailer revealed in a New York Magazine interview that he was sold on appearing because the show also invited his son, Stephen. Now, the episode doesnā€™t just stop at surprising us with Mailer. The storyline throws us into Sookieā€™s mad descent into fury over losing lunch service at the Dragonfly Inn. And guess who bears the brunt of it? Poor olā€™ Mailer who just wants his tea. Mailer handles Sookieā€™s theatrics with more grace than expected, as she loses her cool, hires Kirk (dressed as a hot dog), shouts at Mailer, and eventually reveals that sheā€™s pregnant.

James Berg and Stan Zimmerman who brought us shows like ā€œGolden Girls,ā€ ā€œRoseanne,ā€ and the co-created ā€œRita Rocks,ā€ infused their magic into Stars Hollow for this unforgettable episode. Ā

In Omnia Paratus

The episode revolves around Rory, who finds herself in the midst of a seemingly mundane interview with Len, a torrent guru. But hold on to your coffee mugs, folks, because this is where things get wild! While in the ladies' bathroom, Rory encounters a mysterious blonde in a red ball gown, wearing ā€“ wait for it ā€“ a gorilla mask! She takes off the mask, touches up her makeup, and sprints away. Rory, being the intrepid journalist that she is, follows her. Outside, the woman utters the phrase ā€œin omnia paratusā€ before hopping into a black SUV.

Now, if you're like me, you're already hooked. Rory dives into research and discovers that the phrase is linked to a secret Yale society called the Life and Death Brigade. As it turns out, this society has roots reaching back to Logan's grandfather. So, putting two and two together, Rory hypothesizes that Logan is also involved.

Hereā€™s where I've got to speak my mind. This portrayal of Sookie as unhinged while pregnant is kinda tired and not a great look. It perpetuates the stereotype that pregnant women are irrational, which historically has been an excuse to discriminate against them, especially in leadership roles.

Time to grow up!

On to Lorelai, who's being super supportive of Christopher dealing with fatherhood. I just canā€™t even with this. Christopher is the epitome of a clueless dad and honestly, Iā€™m like, deal with your stuff, man. Google is a thing! Thereā€™s a level of responsibility that needs to be shouldered, especially for someone in a privileged position.

Let's pivot to Rory, our aspiring journalist, who stumbles upon some secret society drama at Yale. Iā€™m talking gorilla masks, red ball gowns, and cryptic Latin phrases. Her journalistic instincts kick in and sheā€™s on it like a caffeine addict on a fresh cup of coffee. Logan, with his wealthy background and family connection to the society, is thrown into the mix. The chemistry between them is brewing like a storm in a teacup. Goodbye Dean, hello secret societies and old money!

By the end of the episode, Rory does stand up for her mom, telling Christopher to keep his distance from Lorelai. I'm torn here ā€“ it's like, go Rory for standing up for your mom, but also, boundaries maybe?
